Coming in 2017......... A New Time in Our Life

As of December 29th, 2016, I am no longer working at Duke University. It's a bitter-sweet time in my life, but I know this is the right choice for me and my husband, Wiley.  We have all kinds of plans and know there will be life changes and not all of them will be easy.

Stampin Up has been an exciting part of my life. I love making paper crafts, trying new techniques, and making some fantastic products.  This will be my hobby with benefits. The biggest benefits is making new friends, like each of you. So let's start talking about all the things we enjoy in life.

I will start with more about our family. Wiley and I were married on April 10, 2010 at a not so young age. We presently have 3 cute fur babies, 4 children between us, and 4 grandchildren. Wiley built our home in Raleigh, North Carolina, then later he added a 1100 sq ft craft room.  He is crafty in his own right. Wiley was a builder, then a builder inspector prior to retirement. The work on our  home makes it our own personal paradise. As Wiley has been retired for about 2 years, we feel this is the beginning of our time together.

One the other hand, I have been a critical care nurse, followed by a pulmonary triage nurse. Our patients have pulmonary fibrosis, a terminal illness. It was easy to love these patients, and I enjoyed doing things to make their lives more comfortable and improve their quality of life.  As a retired nurse, I will be assisting with a support group and soon will be going live with a new blog for patients with pulmonary fibrosis. More about this later.

Now lets take a look at some of the fantastic project created over the holidays.

This set of candles were made for my daughter. Each one as been cover in Epson salt, and the "L" was embedded in the side of the largest one only.

I just love Santa anything. So it is not surprising to anyone that knows me to see me make a a Santa candle. Actually, this one is made with a napkin and glitter.
Peppermint candle anyone? This candle was painted in red paint and then Epson salt was added only to the red areas of the candle. Hmm looks like I need to fit that bow.
Made with Stampin Up products.... Just think of all the things we will come up with for the other holidays?

Some created with paint, others with napkins and the another one is with all Stampin Up products.

Let's start with how I used Stampin Up to create this lovely candle.

Supplies needed:

Wax paper
SU heating tool  129053
 Festive Flower Builder Punch 139682
This Christmas  DSP
Natural & Old Olive Baker Twine 135837
Rhinestone Basic Jewels Embellishments
Crushed Curry Stampin Write Marker 131901
Big Shot 143263
Big Shot Magnetic Platform 130658

-Get all your supplies together. This is super important. Working with candle wax you don't have time to stop an chase down needed supplies.
-Prepare your paper. Tear your DSP paper so it is straight on one end and torn on the other. Make it any height you want it to be.  Be sure there is enough to go completely around the candle without a lot of overlap. Also be sure the ends across the top are close to being the same height.
-Tear off enough wax paper that it will wrap completely around your candle with extra for you to hold in the back.
-Place your DSP around the candle, being sure it is where you want it to be. Now wrap the wax side of the wax paper around both the candle and the DSP. Gather the extra in the back.
-Using your heat tool, start heating the wax paper to the DSP and the candle. The wax paper will get shiny as the wax from the wax paper starts to melt to the DSP. Move slowly around your candle.
-When you have completed about half way around the candle, sit it down and rub wax smooth from top to bottom.
-Wrap the wax paper back around the candle with the part you just completed and repeat the heating process. Remember to rub the wax smooth with your hands.
-Now we can sit it aside and make your flower, greenery and tie your ribbon.

Your candle will feel like wax all over, even in the paper area.

Don't Toss the Foil

Don't Toss the Foil

I love butterflies. So it is not surprising when I started looking for something to make that would shine, the Basic Butterfly Framelits jumped in my hand.
Want to know the secret to making this butterfly totally awesome! First here is the list of supplies you will need:

  • Heavy Duty Aluminum foil
  • Big Shot with 1 A plates (clear), magnet plate and precision plate.
  • fun foam (it you use the thin kind, plan on 2 sheet per cut)
  • framelit
  • Alcohol ink
  • supplies to complete your cards
-Let's get started. First, tear off a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil about 12" long. Now fold it in half the long way, then, fold in half again. You will have 8 layers of foil.

fold foil in half

Let make our 'sandwich' to put in the Big Shot.
  • Magnet plate
  • precision plate
  • fun foam
  • foil
  • framelit
  • clear A plate
Just an FYI it will be a tight fit.

This are beautiful just like this but lets move one step further. I use alcohol ink in my aqua painters. Alcohol inks dry fast, so you will need to work fast.

I enjoy this process so much, I forgot when to stop...... So I made it my swap when I went to OnStage in Atlanta, Ga.

I hope you enjoy making this foil cuts as much as I do. Show me what you have made using your dye cuts and foil.

Christmas Shaker Cards

 Christmas Shaker Cards

I love making Christmas Cards. Adding to that the fun of making shaker Christmas cards or adult/children coloring cards and I am in my crafting zone. Let's look at some different ways we can make shaker cards.

1-- You will see this kind of shaker card everywhere. It's easy with little per planning. The shaker part is in the front on top.
In this card to shaker is raised on the card. No hole to punch. Just place the shaker section on top of your card. Easy!!

This one is easy too. First cut out the stocking in your top layer, then emboss. Now add your shaker section to the back side of the top layer. Only think left to do, is place it behind the cut out.
2-- This one needs a tiny bit more work. After making your shaker section, you place it on the inside of your card. There is one difference, to make the card fold smoothly. Score fold twice with about an 1/8 of an inch. This allows for the card to fold over the thick shaker section.
3-- As you are getting better at your shaker card skills, this one will be easier. The shaker section in on the inside, but there is a hole so it will show through to the front. This one takes some lining up. Also remember since the shaker will be on the inside, you will need that 1/8 of an inch double score to make it fold smooth. Remember to take this in account when you cut your hole in the front of your card.

Sending shaker cards are fun for everyone. The WOW factor from the receiver will bring smiles to everyone face as they shake the card to see snow falling, or hear the beads rolling.
Enjoy making your shaker cards.

Santa's Sleigh Card with Stampin Up

Santa's Sleigh Card By Stampin Up

Christmas is just around the corner and I am in the mood to made some Christmas Cards. The one I would like to share with you this month is Santa's Sleigh with his reindeer. You have seen me do this card fold before, but so many have asked to see it in other seasons.

Supplies:

Santa's Sleigh Stamp set (142057)  or  Bundle  (143499) Save 10%
Santa's Sleigh Thinlits Dies  (140278)
Very Vanilla card stock  4 1/4 x 11, 3 3/4 x 5,  2 pieces  2 1/2 x 5, 2 x 11
Gold Foil card stock  4 x 5 1/4, 2 pieces of 2 3/4 x 5 1/2, 2 1/2 x 4, 2 1/4 x 11
Soft Suede to cut 6 reindeer
Candy Cane Lane Baker's Twine (141983)
Markers to color the presents and trees.

Instructions:

To make this card stand out, start by scoring your base card at 5 1/2, and 2 3/4. Then score both the gold foil and very vanilla strip.  Be sure to stamp and cut out 6  reindeer.

Stamp and color 3 trees. Oh and 1 star

Die Cut both sections of the sleigh.  Add your Christmas packages.

Now when you are ready to assemble; Fold your base card in half the fold the top half back on itself. Do the same to your strip. Only when you are ready to put the strip on the card place the 5 1/2 strip on the 2 3/4 part of the base card. In short, the strip is opposite the base card.

You are going to love making this card. When mailing it is going to require extra postage, because it is a little bulky.
